Dr. Fouad H. Fouad is Professor and Immediate Past Chair of the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), USA. His contributions to the engineering profession are insurmountable. He is largely known for his significant contributions to the research, design, analysis, inspection, installation, and remediation of spun cast prestressed concrete utility poles used throughout the national electric transmission grid. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete and has published numerous technical papers in the field. His research efforts have led to the development of various patents, national standards, and specifications for a number of sustainable green concrete products and building systems. Fouad currently chairs the PCI committee on Prestressed Concrete Poles and the ASTM committee on Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. He is the past chair of ACI committee on Cellular Concrete and the founding chair of its subcommittee on AAC. Fouad is a fellow of ACI and ASCE and has received a number of prestigious awards due to his professional services in the civil engineering field.
Dr. Fouad has recently been selected as a 2025 inductee into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. He is also the recipient of the 2009 Engineering Council of Birmingham (ECOB) Engineer of the Year award. As a licensed professional engineer, he is a strong advocate for licensure and encourages students to make a passing attempt at the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and/or the Professional Engineering (PE) examination prior to graduation. Dr. Fouad created the Advisory Board consisting of industry professionals to assist with the provisions of scholarships, career guidance, employment opportunities, pre-graduation experience in the form of job shadowing, internships, and co-ops, and the selection of industry relevant course content and curricula.
Dr. Fouad retired as Chair with over 4o years of loyal service to UAB and continues to serve as an industry consultant.
